Alan was one of the
session musicians who made up the group that I got together after Jimmy Page
and J.P Jones left to make up Yardbirds 3. The session guys in this group were
:- Barry Morgan-Drums, Herbie Flowers-Bass, Roger Coulham,Organ, Alan Parker
and me on guitars. At this time there were no vocalists. All of us guys were
at the top of the tree as far as sessions went, we couldn't do any more than
we were doing. I said to the guys that we should get vocalists and a manager
and go out on the road. At this time there was a lot of money to be made on
live gigs. I was the only one who wanted to do this and most of the objections
came from Herbie and Alan. This made me make up my mind about about going on
the road with Tom Jones. Tom had made an offer to me that was excellent and
because the guys didn't want to go on the road I went with Tom. The rest of
the guys went on to make up a group with Madeline Bell and Roger Cook called
'Blue Mink'. So I was the one who missed out. Still the 5 years with Tom Jones
taught me one hell of a lot about life and that experience can't be bought.
Alan went on to be a great composer of film and TV music. You Only have to turn
on the Tele and you will hear his music. 'News at Ten' is one of most famous.
He has also written for sports and nature programs.
